How to Extract Alive in Gravhounds

The longer you stay, the better the haul — and the more likely you become alien chow.

How to Extract Alive

Extraction is the win condition that makes Gravhounds an action builder instead of an endless tower-defense demo. You drop, you build, you grab, you leave. Steam’s pitch is one sentence: extract with everything you can carry before you become alien chow. Xbox Wire adds the workplace version: get what you came for and try to leave with everyone still alive. This page is about the decision, not the lore.

If you have not learned the loop, read Getting Started first. If your extracts fail because the factory never existed, read How to build. If they fail because nobody could move a crate, read Grav Beam.

The bet

Official systems all point at the same lever:

  • Seek treacherous planets for the best materials — higher risk, greater rewards.
  • Stay longer, push harder, and the swarm escalates.
  • Every shift is a bet on how much your pack can handle.
  • Reward Pods keep injecting power while the planet injects teeth.

There is no published numeric heat meter in the materials we have, so we will not invent one. You will feel the bet as repairs stacking, wildlife getting ruder, and the pipe needing a babysitter. A healthy first-shift rule: leave on the objective, not on the vibe. If the job COSMO posted is done, extra crates are optional DLC for your ego.

Keep the escape route alive

Pipeline copy on Steam is not flavor. Pipe powers the base, moves resources, and keeps the escape route alive. Late-shift building should be repair and coverage on the path home, not a new suburb on the far ridge. Unlimited pipe-boost exists specifically so you can race to a teammate or make a last dash for materials. Use it to collapse the squad toward the dropship, not to start a new mining career at minute thirty.

Checklist before you call extract:

  1. Job crate / objective actually in motion toward the dropship.
  2. Spine still powered. If the generator is a crater, you are already late.
  3. At least one turret covering the walk, not the empty desert you mined ten minutes ago.
  4. A caller. Four dogs all “one more node” is how wipes are born. See co-op.
  5. Volatile cargo not stacked in the doorway. The Grav Beam disclaimer is an extract problem too.

Greed patterns to name out loud

  • The scenic route. A far high-tier node after the objective is bagged. Only legal if the pipe is green and someone stays on defense.
  • The souvenir. Grabbing a second unstable tank because the first one was funny. Funny is not a loadout.
  • The hero revive. Play Dead and self-revive adjacent tools (see Finn) can save a run. They can also bait three living hounds into a corpse pile. Call a cut.
  • The research ping. Trailer voicelines joke about new research options. Treat mid-shift upgrades as fuel for the leave, not a reason to stay forever. Loadouts explains the snowball; this page tells you when to cash it.

Solo versus pack extracts

Solo: you are the caller, the pipe tech, and the mule. Build a shorter spine. Leave earlier. The game is described as intense alone — believe it.

Pack: assign a “clock.” One player is allowed to be greedy; the others are allowed to veto. Selene’s Fetch helps a distant crate become a throw instead of a camping trip. Dozer’s mines cover a retreat choke. Zane and Luna still share the same extract physics even if their unique kits are less documented — see the crew hub.

After a failed extract

Roguelite structure means a lost shift still contributes to longer-term unlocks of Gravhounds, weapons, and upgrade paths. That is comfort, not a reason to throw the next job on purpose. Note what killed you: pipe, greed, wildlife, or beam accident. Fix that on the next drop. Early Access will add more worlds and enemies; the bet stays the same.

Leave with the quota. COSMO will invent another job. The planet will not get friendlier if you linger for a screenshot.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Gravhounds players.

When should I extract in Gravhounds?

When the job is done and the spine still works. Extra time is extra swarm. Make the call in co-op voice, not in your head.

Do I lose everything if I wipe?

You lose the haul. Meta unlocks are described as carrying between jobs. Exact inventory rules will be confirmed in Early Access.

Does staying longer always pay more?

Official copy says danger and rewards both rise. Payment is not guaranteed if you never reach the dropship.

What keeps the escape route open?

Pipeline power, repairs, and turret coverage on the path home. See How to build.
